Self Defense Workshop

How would you respond if your safety or life was in jeopardy? Could you defend yourself or someone you love against an attacker? You can choose not to be a victim!

Join us on February 11th from 10:30am - 12:30pm for a self defense class that could save your life!

Your instructor, Erin, has been a police officer for the past 12 years. She learned early on, due to her size, that she needed to approach her safety with a survival mindset. For eight years, Erin has been teaching police officers the necessary skills to survive violent encounters and deal with potentially life threatening confrontations. Erin is now bringing her survival mindset, knowledge and experience to you. Her mission is to empower people by providing relevant skills while developing the mindset and confidence to survive an attack.

Erin is a certified Master Defensive Tactics Instructor through the WA State Criminal Justice Training Commission. She has taught recruits and students at both the police academy and at Everett Community College. She earned her Masters of Science through the University of Washington and currently works for local law enforcement. Erin founded and runs My Will To Survive, teaching people in the community, youth and professionals how to protect themselves.

During this two hour training, you will learn legal boundaries for self-defense, targeting, bodily impact weapons, awareness, strikes, kicks, blocks and escapes. You will become empowered, take control of your own safety, and will learn skills to protect yourself.

All proceeds from local classes go directly to provide the same lifesaving skills to women and girls in Haiti.

$40 for members.

Register today at www.mywilltosurvive.org. If you have questions, please contact Erin.

Film Night: The Red Badge of Courage (1951)

Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen Crane (1971-1900), this Civil War film, directed by John Huston (The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen, etc), describes the attempt by a young recruit to deal with the horrors of war. The lead role, played by Audie Murphy, is particularly remarkable because Murphy won a Congressional Medal of Honor for acts of valor during WWII, itself the subject of a movie, To Hell and Back (1955), in which the hero plays himself. Huston does an outstanding job in bringing the confusion of battle to life in which the hero ultimately finds courage.

Employee of the Month - Jordan LaPier

Please join us in congratulating the Facilities Director, Jordan LaPier, as our January Employee of the Month! Jordan has been working at Seattle Athletic Club since February of last year and has become a great addition to the SAC team. Having previously held a similar position with Comcast Area and significant experience within the construction field, Jordan brings a wealth of knowledge to our Facilities Department. A few of the things Jordan enjoys most as Facilities Director is, “the variety of work, it’s not the constant same thing over and over, and I am always learning something new. And all the people here, members and staff, are great.”

In his spare time Jordan enjoys spending time with family and three year old son, Alex. Jordan is also an avid video game enthusiast or as some refer to as a “gamer”. He is also a Hockey fan and enjoys dabbling in the ever changing world of technology.

Congratulations on being voted Employee of the Month, Jordan.

Squash Corner

Refereeing
Countless articles have been written on rules and refereeing, and yet there is and always will be disagreements when it comes to a game of squash between two competitive players. The game moves quickly, and differences in perception will always exist even if we had instant replay with slow motion. So what can be done to make sure that the game remains safe, fair, and fun for all?

Here is a top 10 list to get you started.

Contact Bruce Vinsonhaler or call 206-522-9400 ext.107 and leave a message for more information about playing squash. We look forward to seeing you on the squash courts in 2012!
